Dr. Kikunae Ikeda succeeded in isolating glutamate from a Japanese sea vegetable called Kombu in 1908. His creation, Monosodium Glutamate (MSG), was like no other food additive that existed. It gave food manufacturers the ability to balance flavor in product lines, mask unwanted tastes, and make otherwise unpalatable foods acceptable. When U.S. food manufacturers acquired the additive after WWII and found a way to synthetically produce the product, its potential as a multi-billion dollar industry was sealed.
What is it?
MSG- monosodium glutamate is a salt of the amino acid - Glutamic Acid
(glutamate). A salt is the chemical name for a molecule held together by
opposite charges. Basically one (mono) sodium atom is "stuck"
to the amino acid glutamate.the dictionary calls it a white, crystalline,
water-soluble powder.
What does it
do?
It is used to intensify the flavor of foods.
Dr. Olney conducted studies to investigate the possibility of long term effects from MSG ingestion and concluded that MSG cause Obesity, Shorter Growth, Seizures, and Reproduction Problems From MSG intake.
Many studies mentioned in John Erb's book link MSG to Diabetes, Migraines and headaches, Autism, ADHD and even Alzheimer's .
The MSG manufacturers themselves admit that it addicts people to their products. It makes people choose their product over others, and makes people eat more of it than they would if MSG wasn't added. MSG is scientifically proven to cause obesity (Scientist created obese mice and rats by injecting them with MSG).I encourage you to continue research MSG to substantiate this fact.
You may be surprised at how many MSG laden foods line the local grocery shelves. The food additive is in soups, salad dressings, processed meats, and most frozen and diet entrees. In the spice aisle, there are even containers of pure MSG. MSG is listed on the label only if it is a separate ingredient in the food. In most cases, MSG is hidden by including it as part of other ingredients on the label. It can make up as much as 60% of these other ingredients.
